Chinese A (Literature)
Chinese B (Language Acquisition)
Our tutors teach both tracks — tell us which you're on when you enquire.
Who it's for: Students studying Chinese as a second or additional language. Chinese B falls under the Language Acquisition subject group.
Available at: SL and HL.
Assessment: Paper 1 — text production (writing in specific text types). Paper 2 — receptive skills (reading comprehension and listening). Individual Oral (IO) — speaking assessment linked to a global issue and a studied literary work.
Focus: Communicative proficiency across all four skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students develop vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and the ability to produce purposeful, audience-aware Chinese text.
HL vs SL: HL requires a higher level of linguistic sophistication and includes an additional literary component in the Individual Oral.
Delivery: In-person at 5 Tank Road and online.
Who it's for: Students for whom Chinese is their strongest language, studying it as a subject of literary and language analysis. Falls under the Studies in Language and Literature subject group.
Available at: SL and HL.
Assessment: Paper 1 — guided literary analysis (unseen text in Chinese). Paper 2 — comparative essay on studied Chinese literary works. Individual Oral (IO) — analysis of an extract linked to a global issue. HL Essay (HL only) — 1,200–1,500 word literary essay in Chinese.
Focus: Critical analysis of literary and non-literary Chinese texts, understanding of global issues through a Chinese literary lens, and high-level academic writing in Chinese.
Delivery: Online only.

IGCSE Chinese introduces language skills at a manageable pace. IB Chinese B demands significantly higher written accuracy, broader vocabulary, and the ability to produce sophisticated text types under timed conditions. Students who enter Year 5 without preparation often find the transition difficult.
Chinese B Paper 1 requires students to produce specific text types (formal letters, speeches, articles, reports) with correct register, purpose, and structural conventions — all in Chinese. Marks are frequently lost on failing to meet text type requirements rather than language errors alone.
The IO requires students to present an extract and engage in a teacher-led discussion about a global issue — in Chinese. Many students struggle with academic Chinese vocabulary, maintaining fluency under pressure, and linking their extract confidently to global issues. Targeted oral practice is essential.
IB Chinese A Language and Literature requires students to analyse literary and non-literary texts, write comparative essays, and produce a HL Essay — all in formal academic Chinese. This demands not just language fluency but genuine literary analytical skill that most students need structured guidance to develop.
All our IB Chinese tutors in Singapore are native Chinese speakers with formal IB certification or equivalent qualifications. They bring both linguistic authenticity and deep syllabus expertise to every lesson — an essential combination for developing genuine Chinese proficiency alongside exam technique.

IB Chinese B is a Language Acquisition course for students learning Chinese as a second or additional language. It focuses on communicative proficiency — text production (Paper 1), receptive skills (Paper 2), and oral communication (IO). IB Chinese A (Language and Literature) is a literature and language analysis course for students whose strongest language is Chinese. It focuses on critical analysis of Chinese literary and non-literary texts, academic essay writing, and global issues in Chinese literature. Chinese A is generally more analytically demanding; Chinese B is more linguistically focused. Our team teaches both courses.
It depends on the student's existing Chinese level. IB Chinese B SL is designed for students with a good foundation in Chinese — roughly equivalent to a solid IGCSE Chinese second language level. Students who enter with weaker foundations often find the syllabus pace challenging without proper support. Our Pre-IBDP Chinese B bridging programme is specifically designed to prepare students before Year 5 begins.
Chinese is one of the most valuable languages in the world — for business, culture, and academic study. IB Chinese B is a strong choice for students with a working knowledge of Chinese who want to consolidate and formalise their skills. For native or near-native speakers, Chinese A offers a rigorous literary and analytical education in Chinese. Both courses are recognised by universities globally.
Paper 1 requires students to produce a range of text types in Chinese — including formal and informal letters, articles, blog posts, speeches, reports, brochures, and diary entries. Each text type has specific structural conventions, register requirements, and audience expectations. A major focus of our tuition is ensuring students know exactly what each text type requires in Chinese, as this is where many marks are won or lost.
Yes. IB Chinese B is available both in-person at 5 Tank Road (near Fort Canning MRT) and online. IB Chinese A Language & Literature is available online only. All online sessions are conducted via Zoom or similar, with recordings provided for revision and WhatsApp support available between lessons.
1-to-1 lessons offer fully personalised attention, faster progress, and scheduling flexibility — ideal for students who need intensive support, have specific gaps to address, or are preparing for exams at short notice. Group classes foster peer interaction, are more affordable, and work well for students who benefit from hearing how classmates approach the same problems. Both formats include the same materials, past papers, and WhatsApp support. Our coordinators can help you decide which format suits your child's needs.
Yes. IA guidance is included for both Chinese A and Chinese B. For Chinese B, this means Individual Oral preparation — extract selection, presentation structure, and discussion practice. For Chinese A, this covers the full range of assessed components including the IO and HL Essay. We also offer specialist TOK and Extended Essay guidance for students writing in Chinese.
Group lessons are $480 for 4 lessons (1.5 hours each, small group). 1-to-1 tuition is $600 for 4 lessons, subject to tutor availability. Fees are prorated with no hidden charges. Make-up sessions are available and group lesson recordings are shared with students who miss a session.
