IB English B is assessed through three components: Paper 1 (text production — writing in a specific text type with appropriate register and purpose), Paper 2 (receptive skills — reading comprehension and listening with past papers), and the Individual Oral (a speaking assessment where students present an extract linked to a global issue and discuss it with their teacher for about 10–15 minutes).

English A (Language and Literature) is assessed through Paper 1 (guided literary analysis of an unseen text — HL responds without the guiding question), Paper 2 (comparative essay on two studied literary works, written under timed exam conditions), the Individual Oral (analysis of a chosen extract linked to a global issue), and for HL students, a HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words on a studied literary work).

Start by deeply studying the texts you plan to use and identifying strong global issues that connect to them meaningfully. Practice structuring a 10-minute presentation that introduces the extract, analyses key features, and builds to a discussion of the global issue. Practise with timed mock sessions. Mr B prepares students with the exact question types teachers and examiners use in the discussion phase, and gives feedback based on real marking criteria.

The most common mistakes are: producing the wrong text type (e.g., writing a letter when the task requires a report), using inappropriate register (e.g., informal language in a formal report), poor paragraph structure, not addressing the purpose and audience clearly, and running out of time.
