Specialist IB Physics tuition at 5 Tank Road — fully aligned to the new 2025 syllabus. IBO-certified tutors. Real-world applications. 95%+ of students score 6 or 7.
The IB Physics syllabus underwent its most significant restructuring in over a decade — first taught in 2023 and first assessed in May 2025. The new curriculum replaces the old numbered-topic format with five integrated themes (A–E), removes the separate HL options paper, and incorporates content that was previously optional — including special relativity, rotational mechanics, and stellar physics — directly into the core syllabus.
For students, this means a broader and more interconnected curriculum that demands stronger conceptual understanding from day one. At Photon Academy, our IB Physics tuition in Singapore is fully aligned to this new syllabus. Mr Ejaz, with his NUS Mechanical Engineering background and 15+ years of IB teaching experience, connects every theme to real-world engineering applications — making abstract physics tangible and exam-ready. This approach is why 95%+ of our students score a 6 or 7.
The IBO restructured the IB Physics course from the ground up. If you're searching for IB Physics tuition in Singapore, it's critical that your tutor teaches the new syllabus — not the old one. Here's what changed:
Removed from the Syllabus
Added to the Syllabus
The new structure uses five integrated themes (A–E) instead of numbered topics. Content from the old HL options — relativity, engineering physics, and astrophysics — has been woven into these themes, making the course more cohesive but also more demanding.
Assessment: Paper 1 — 25 MCQs + data-based questions (1.5 hrs, 36%). Paper 2 — short-answer & extended-response (1.5 hrs, 44%). IA — scientific investigation (20%).
Content: All five themes (A–E) at standard depth — kinematics, forces, energy, thermal transfers, greenhouse effect, gas laws, wave model, wave phenomena, SHM, gravitational & electric fields, atomic structure, radioactive decay, fission & fusion.
What's new: Special relativity basics, Doppler effect, and stellar physics are now part of the SL core — topics previously reserved for HL options.
Best for: Students who need Physics as a supporting science (e.g., for Biology, Environmental Systems, or business-oriented degrees) but are not pursuing engineering or physics at university.
Assessment: Paper 1 — 40 MCQs + data-based questions (2 hrs, 36%). Paper 2 — short-answer & extended-response (2.5 hrs, 44%). IA — scientific investigation (20%). No Paper 3 in the new syllabus.
Content: All SL content PLUS HL extensions within each theme — rigid body mechanics, Lorentz transformations & time dilation, thermodynamic cycles & entropy, angular momentum, electric & gravitational potential, electromagnetic induction, Compton scattering, muon decay evidence, and Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams for stellar classification.
What changed: The old HL options (relativity, engineering physics, imaging, astrophysics) have been removed. Key content from these options is now integrated into the five core themes — making HL broader but more cohesive.
Best for: Students aiming for engineering, physics, medicine, architecture, or any quantitative science at university. Required by most top universities for STEM courses.
Unsure whether to take HL or SL? Our IB Physics tutors can advise based on your university aspirations and current foundation.
Special relativity, rotational mechanics, and stellar physics — topics that were previously optional — are now embedded in the core syllabus for all students. This means HL students face a significantly broader curriculum with no ability to choose easier options. IB Physics tuition that covers these integrated topics from the start is essential.
The Physics IA is a scientific investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Students must design experiments, collect data, analyse results, and evaluate their methodology — all independently. Many students lose marks not on the physics itself, but on the write-up structure and evaluation criteria. Our IB Physics tutors guide every stage from topic selection to final draft.
The new IB Physics syllabus introduces topics that never existed before — the greenhouse effect resonance model, quantitative thermal conduction, Compton scattering, Millikan's experiment, and drag forces on orbiting bodies. Students sitting the new exams cannot rely on older resources, making specialist IB Physics tuition with up-to-date materials critical.
With special relativity (Lorentz transformations, time dilation), rotational dynamics (angular momentum, torque), and thermodynamic cycles now in the core, the mathematical bar is higher than ever. Mr Ejaz's dual background in IB Math and Physics means he identifies and fills these gaps efficiently — a key advantage of our IB Physics tuition programme.
The restructured IB Physics curriculum isn't just a cosmetic reshuffle — it represents a genuine increase in difficulty for both SL and HL students. The old syllabus allowed HL students to choose from four option topics (Relativity, Engineering Physics, Imaging, and Astrophysics); now, the hardest content from those options has been woven directly into the five core themes. This means every HL student must study special relativity, rotational mechanics, and stellar physics — content that many previously avoided.
For SL students, the shift is equally significant. Topics like the Doppler effect, stellar classification, and the greenhouse effect resonance model are now part of the SL core. The removal of Paper 3 means Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry more weight, demanding consistent performance across both. Students who wait until Year 2 to begin exam preparation often find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of interconnected content.
This is precisely why early, structured IB Physics tuition makes such a difference. At Photon Academy, we introduce these challenging topics from the start — building conceptual understanding alongside mathematical fluency so that students aren't playing catch-up when exams approach.
Mr Ejaz holds a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering from NUS and IBO certification. He doesn't just teach formulas — he connects physics to real engineering applications, giving students a deeper conceptual grip that pays off in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
With 15+ years of teaching experience, Mr Ejaz understands exactly what IB examiners expect. Lessons are built around the mark scheme, command terms, and the specific way IB questions are structured — not generic textbook teaching.
Group sessions are capped at 4 students. Every student gets direct attention, can ask questions at any point, and progresses at a pace that suits them. No student gets left behind.
All students receive: comprehensive topic notes, curated question banks, past paper practice with worked solutions, IA guidance, WhatsApp support, and recorded lessons for revision. Parents receive regular progress updates.
The new IB Physics syllabus is organised into five integrated themes. Our IB Physics tuition covers every sub-topic across all five themes, plus comprehensive IA guidance. See the official IBO Physics subject page for the full 2025 guide.
Topics marked HL are additional Higher Level content. Topics marked NEW are new to the 2025 syllabus.

What Our IB Students Say
5.0 stars from verified Google reviews. See what students and parents say about Photon Academy.
Under the new IB Physics syllabus (first assessed 2025), both HL and SL study the same five themes — A: Space, Time & Motion, B: The Particulate Nature of Matter, C: Wave Behaviour, D: Fields, and E: Nuclear & Quantum Physics. HL students cover additional depth within each theme, including rigid body mechanics, special relativity (Lorentz transformations), thermodynamic cycles, and stellar physics. Both levels sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 plus the IA — there is no longer a Paper 3 or HL options.
IB Physics HL remains one of the most challenging IB subjects. The new syllabus integrates topics previously reserved as HL options — special relativity, rotational mechanics, and astrophysics — directly into the core curriculum. This means broader content with higher mathematical demand (Lorentz transformations, angular momentum, thermodynamic cycles). With structured IB Physics tuition, past paper practice, and IA guidance, 95%+ of our students score 6 or 7.
Group lessons are $480 for 4 lessons (1.5 hours each, max 4 students). 1-to-1 tuition is $600 for 4 lessons, subject to tutor availability. Fees are prorated and there are no hidden charges.
